Landscape symmetry

Influenced by the surreal works of Tomas Saraceno in his images and films of the salt lake in Bolivia.

In his work he appears to be suspended in an unreal, imaginary setting where, like water, time stands still and senses are distorted. Water is a mythical substance, which mirrors the world in which it is immersed. Enabling us to view our reality in a surreal way. It creates a crisp, clear copy yet it is the distorted, handed version of the world in which we live, a world we cannot enter. These ‘mirrored landscapes’, highlight the captivating illusions made by water and the way we as humans read and understand reflection.

Sally O’Reilly describes the composition in Saraceno’s pieces, ‘the screen is bisected horizontally by the reflective surface of the salt lake, essentially thumbing its nose to the endless production of digitally manipulated doppelgängers. But his mirror is real rather than gratuitous, and its effect wantonly beautiful’ which is also present in my works but presented through a vertical composition.
