The Petrol Station

Reaction Investigation Piece

To conclude the sequence of investigation into the surreal underwater world paralleling with societies twisted view of ‘the norm’. I thought it would be interesting to explore a situation in which the roles are reversed where the bright dress becomes the aggressor and potentially threatens an everyday situation which is both familiar and normal.

The barefooted girl in the floral dress, visits the petrol station drenched from head to foot.

A disconcerting intrusion into a mundane everyday situation, prompting others at the petrol station or viewing the work to question the mind-set of the young girl. She is no longer seen as an innocent playful girl and her presence has generated a level of discomfort for the viewer in their attempt to comprehend what is being presented. In this sequence, it is the bright dress in its dripping state which promotes a heightened sense of anxiety, reinforced by the barefooted drenched figure who is leaving pools of water on the floor behind her.

In reality, this steams from an ignorance of fully understand the situation before us. All that is witnessed is a girl in a bright, wet, dress walking into a petrol station, the discomfort is not generated by the subject matter but how it is interpreted by society.
